2009 GUIDE BOOK CHANGES

SLIDE BROOK TRAIL The Slide Brook Trail is closed. This is the trail that starts almost directly across the way from the Owls Head Mt. trailhead on Route 115 in Jefferson. Beaver activity has closed the trail. It is closed for good as there is no suitable alternative route through the low boggy country to the north. Northbounders To get around this problem, turn east downhill on Route 115 and walk one mile along the highway to Route 115A. Turn left (north) and walk a quarter of a mile. Pass under powerlines over the road and then watch for an open area on the left where there is a bar-gate some 100 feet to the west. Go to the bar-gate and cross around it. You are now on the old B&M railroad bed that goes to Moorhen Marsh and Cherry Pond. Take it westbound to the lake. You are now back on the original Cohos Trail. Southbounders You are coming along eastbound on the old B&M railroad bed leaving Cherry Pond. stay on this old railbed all the way until you reach Route 115A. Turn right uphill at the highway and walk a quarter mile to Route 115. Turn right again and walk one mile to the Owls Head Mt. trailhead on the left side of the highway. You are back on the original Cohos Trail route once you get to the trailhead. NORTH OF WEIRS TREE FARM Northbounders You have reached the Weir's Tree Farm with its stunning view. Drop downhill on the old lane quickly to a sharp left turn, go a few yards, bearing left. Follow this woods way on the level until you reach a new gate a quarter mile from the turn. The way into Clarksville Bog is closed. Stay straight on the wide grassy way passing through another gate and drop downhill, level out, then slowly work your way uphill to a junction with a trail that cuts hard left. If you intend to go to Rudy's Campground, take that left and stay on the level over a drainage area then enter a farm field. Cross straight across the field rising easily until you see a gate. Go to the gate and pass around it. You are on the traveled portion of the Ferguson Road now headed to Clarksville Pond Road. If you are not going to Rudy's, then continue straight on the snowmobile trail. This is the new Deadwater Trail. Continue on this trail until you reach the Deadwater Loop Road. Turning left will take you out to the Cedar Stream Road and the orignal trail. Turning right will put you on the Cedar Stream Road a couple of hundred yards above the Lake Francis Trail. (Turn left when you reach Cedar Stream road). Both routes are about the same distance. Left has better views of Lake Francis and right has a better chance of seeing wildlife. The choice is yours. Southbounders Running southbound from Clarksville Pond Road down the Old Ferguson Road, stay straight and you reach a gate at the head of a hay field. Cross straight through the field and pick up a snowmobile trail on the far side. Once on the snowmobile trail, cross a drainage area, pass around a gate and reach a junction. Take a hard right turn onto the wide grassy way and drop downhill a bit to a flat, cross that and rise uphill to where another gate appears on your right. Turn left away from the gate and walk a quarter mile to the point where the old lane turns uphill steeply to the right into the Weirs Tree Farm. TO YOUNG'S STORE AND THE PROPOSED PROSPECT MT. TRAIL Northbounders: To reach this link trail, northbounding hikers will be heading north either from Lake Francis Campground or from the junction with Carr Ridge Road (logging road). Hikers may pick up a northbound snowmobile trail that parallels the River Road or simply stick with the road. Either way, not far north of the junction with the River Road and Carr Ridge Road, a wide grassy lane cuts away at a 90 degree angle on either side of the road...You can see this swath from the snowmobile trail and the road, they are that close together. Turn westbound on a wide way. There are very large stones placed on the left beside the new link at the entrance. These stones are landmarks. Also look for CT signs on grade stakes... Hike west on the level for a very short distance then drop abruptly downhill to a good bridge across Perry Brook. Rebound more gradually and continue moving uphill until the rear of Young's Store comes into view well above you. Continue on until you appear to pass the store and pick up the path up to the store parking lot. Southbounders: To reach this link, sounthbounding hikers will leave Route 3 and turn south down the River Road, or pick up the parallel snowmobile path just to the east of the lane. Descend about half a mile or so and watch for a wide path open to the west. Turn right onto this lane. There are large stones on the left side of the lane at the entrance. These are landmarks. Also, look for the CT signs. Hike west on the level for a very short distance then drop abruptly downhill to a good bridge across Perry Brook. Rebound more gradually and continue moving uphill until the rear of Young's Store comes into view well above you... Continue on until you appear to pass the store and pick up the path to the store parking lot. To continue to Bear Ledge Campground, cross RT. 3 at Young's store and head into Mountain View Campground. Stay on this main way until the trail becomes a snowmobile trail. Within a few hundred feet, you will reach Danforth Rd. Turn right and proceed approximately 3/4 miles (staying straight at all intersections) until you reach a field on the right. Turn left at the mailbox at the end of the road. Bear Ledge Campground and the new proposed Mountain Bungalow is about 1/4 mile up the hill.
In the future, should the Prospect Mountain Trail come on line, this southbounding information will become obsolete..
New Link to Young's Store in Pittsburg
Several landowners have recently granted the Cohos Trail Association permission to cross property on an existing snowmobile link that runs from the River Road in Pittsburg to Young's Store on Route 3, a critical resupply outlet for trekkers.
